British people like to read, chat and text friends while on the loo, according to a survey released today to mark World Toilet Day.
More than 14 million choose to read newspapers, books and magazines to pass the time in the bathroom.
Research also suggests that more than eight million people like to talk while on the throne, either to family or on the phone, while one in five like to send text messages.
The Toilet Habit survey, commissioned by aid agency Tearfund, also showed that people think mostly about food while on the loo, and that men are more likely to look around for a distraction than women.
However, Tearfund's research was commissioned with a serious message in mind.
While 75% of people questioned complained about toilets being dirty or unflushed, more than a third of the world's population today do not have clean, safe toilets and every 20 seconds a child dies from poor sanitation or unclean water.
