We’re in familiar phantasy territory here as Mark Wahlberg, the good-guy cop whose wife and child are brutally murdered for no apparent earthly reason, is drawn into a Manichean struggle of almighty proportions in the sort of dark underworld your mum warned you steer clear of. This adaptation of the 2001 video game features Mila Kunis and rapper Ludcaris in supporting roles, big scary demons and helluva noisy special effects.
Kanye West: SECC, Glasgow, Sunday
The rent-a-quote rapper, hip hop mogul and Grammy award-winner stops off in Scotland for one night only on his UK tour. West’s new album 808’s and Heartbreak departs slightly from the traditional hip hop template – lead single Love Lockdown features no rapping whatsoever – but then that’s the sort of thing you can get away when you’ve been crowned “the hottest MC in the game” by MTV.

The new single from the velvet-tonsilled Welsh chanteuse is distinctly Bond-flavoured – in fact, maybe those who likened her to Dusty Springfield were on the money after all. This is her first release since her debut album Rockferry, which swept all before it; don’t be surprised if 2009 is an even bigger year for lush, sophisticated pop.

Johnny Borrell and co. celebrate the release of their new album Slipaway Fires – a flabby great monument to epic rock – with a tour of “all the best venues in the country, a proper rock and roll tour.” All of which should see the poster boys of skinny-fit indie in their bombastic element.
